Back Riviera del Conero

Riviera del Conero

The Conero Riviera is the stretch of the Adriatic coast, high and rocky, that extends from the port of the city of Ancona to that of Numana. It takes its name from Mount Conero, which forms the homonymous promontory overlooking the sea, rich in coves and small rocky or pebbly beaches; it has a coastal development of about twenty kilometers. The area is protected by the Regional Natural Park of Conero.
It is characterized by a high, rugged, and rocky coastline, interrupting the long stretch of low and straight coasts of the Adriatic coastline that extends from Trieste to Gargano. The orography is dominated by the Conero promontory, whose central core is the eponymous mountain; the rest of the territory is occupied by hills. The main watercourses all converge into the Aspio River, a tributary of the Musone River, whose mouth is the southern boundary of the Riviera.
The municipalities that are part of it are four, from north to south: Ancona, Sirolo, Numana, whose territories constitute the Conero promontory and the actual Riviera, and Camerano on the inland side of the mountain.
Under Mount Conero, overlooking the sea, there is a series of beaches with white pebbles, bays, marine caves, and woods facing the Adriatic. Portonovo, a well-known tourist center and Blue Flag location, overlooks the bay of the same name in the heart of the Conero Regional Park. The beach alternates between gravelly and rocky stretches, with very white and rounded limestone pebbles, considered one of the peculiarities of the area. The presence of woods directly in contact with the beach, along with open views towards the majestic Conero, is a major attraction of the area.
Sirolo is one of the villages of the Conero Riviera: it is nestled on a plateau on the southern slope of Mount Conero and is included in the Conero Park area. Below the village, under the steep coast, is the Urbani beach with the homonymous cave that ends to the north with a high cliff, protected by a semicircular barrier of rocks preventing winter storm surges from affecting its base. From there, the San Michele beach, gravelly and equipped with beach facilities, can be reached. Continuing, you reach the Sassi Neri beach, characterized by the presence of black sedimentary schist blocks on the shore. The Due Sorelle beach is the most characteristic and well-known in Sirolo. So named for the two twin rocks emerging from the sea, it is the first white beach on the south side of Mount Conero. It can be reached by sea thanks to boats that depart daily from the port of Numana during the summer.
Numana is a coastal town in central Adriatic, located on the southern slopes of Mount Conero. The territory of Numana is almost entirely within the Regional Park of Mount Conero. The historic center is located in the part called Numana Alta, as it is at the top of a cliff overlooking the sea, while Numana Bassa includes the underlying area of the marina. The beach of Numana Alta includes two bays formed near the cliff: Spiaggiola and Spiaggia dei Frati, while the beach of Numana Bassa extends south of the port to the fraction of Marcelli, equipped with numerous beach resorts, campsites, and holiday clubs.
