For several centuries the records starting in 1230 show that the main church in Cingoli was the parish church of Santa Maria, of which the remains are incorporated into the present-day San Filippo. The work, commissioned to the architect Ascanio Passari di Pergola, required 35 years to complete (1619-1654) excluding the demolition of the surrounding houses and of the small church of San Salvatore, whilst the building of the Cathedral was finished in 1725. The façade was not completed due to lack of funds. The interior, consisting of a single chamber with a transept and apse, was adorned at different times. In the second half of the 17th century it was enriched with sumptuous Baroque-style decorations. Sculptures were then added including notable funeral monuments, which were subsequently followed by paintings.

Due to the earthquake occurred in 2016, the church is temporarily closed. For further information please write to: numeroverde.turismo@regione.marche.it

  • Cingoli - Church of San Domenico
    0039
The stage includes the following destinations: Chiesa di S. Domenico
San Domenico’s church was built at the beginning of the XIII century, according to tradition founded from San Domenico shortly before his death. From the original structure of thirteenth century remains very little having suffered over the centuries amendments and adjustments. In 1500, in particular, the church was the subject of numerous interventions that modified according to the new architectural taste, outside was erected a new bell tower but was the inside to be modified in a substantial manner.

But the most important and significant modification was the positioning of the big paint “Madonna del Rosario e Santi” of Lorenzo Lotto, finished by the venetian painter in the spring of 1539. The “Madonna del Rosario” in Cingoli dates back to the second sojourn of Lorenzo Lotto in The Marches. This work was commissioned by the local “Confraternita del Rosario”, a brotherhood residing in the Church of San Domenico. The painting is signed L. LOTVS and bears the date 1539 in Roman numbers. This work (389x265 cm) is considered one of Lotto’s masterpieces. Reading the painting from top to bottom and from left to right, you can see: the five Joyful Mysteries (the Annunciation of the Lord to Mary; the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth; the Nativity; the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple; the Finding in the Temple), the five Sorrowful Mysteries (the Agony of Jesus in the Garden; the Scourging at the Pillar; the Crowning with Thorns; the Carrying of the Cross; the Crucifixion), and the five Glorious Mysteries (the Resurrection of Jesus; the Ascension into Heaven; the Descent of the Holy Spirit; the Assumption of Mary into Heaven; the Coronation of Mary).

Due to the earthquake occurred in 2016, the church is temporarily closed.

  • Cingoli - Lady of the Rosary, 1539 Lorenzo Lotto
In the spring of 1537, the Dominican Friars from Cingoli commissioned Lotto to paint a picture for the high altar of their renovated Church. This painting, devoted to the subject of the Lady of the Rosary, was completed by Lotto in 1539, as we can read on the majestic stone on which Mary’s throne lies. This impressive picture, 389×264 cm, is undoubtedly one of Lotto’s “masterpieces”: when he painted it, he was sixty years old by then and he confirmed his stylistic, technical, cultural and spiritual competence; indeed the Madonna of the Rosary in Cingoli is one of the most elaborate and semantically deep paintings of the sensitive and erudite Venetian artist.

On an almost nocturnal sky, a majestic rose garden stands out; in the background is a wood trellis on which there are fifteen medallions arranged in three different levels forming a sort of pyramid. These medallions represent the subjects of the fifteen mysteries of the Virgin cult of the Rosary. Detailed masterpieces in the masterpiece.
A limitless wall blocks the bottom of the big rose garden. This wall is made of large blocks and it has been eroded over time; it is another background to the holy conversation with the Virgin, who is on the throne with Jesus. She is surrounded by Saints who are honouring her. They are arranged in three different levels: on the first level there is Saint Dominic and Saint Esuperanzio (patron saint of Cingoli); on the second level there is Maria Magdalene, in a smart dress of the 16th Century and Catherine of Siena; on the last level there are the Dominican Saints Vincent Ferrer and the unmistakable Peter of Verona.

  • Bravi Mill

Bravi Mill boasts very ancient origins: some documents state that it is fully operational since 1565. The place where it stands, in Valcarecce di Cingoli, was an industrial area where also an olive-press, a sawmill and a gunpowder factory stood. The mill, powered by water, is managed since 1970 by the historical Bravi miller family from the town of Cingoli. Still working nowadays, it can be visited by those who wish to discover the ancient milling craft. Here soft wheat flours are produced, both whole and half whole, by grinding native wheat farmed in the surrounding area, and polenta flour from native and eight-lines corn, typical of the area. The mill is placed into a stone building and consists of three millstones dedicated to wheat, corn and spelt, all powered by water, which moves a series of spoon shaped blades tied to a shaft. Surrounded by vegetation, the building is set by a channel about 1.2 kilometers long, parallel to the Musone river, which diverts the river’s water, feeds a basin by the mill and originates the power required to move the blades. Special care and attention are paid by the three Bravi brothers for the production of the flours, so much so that in 2017 they were awarded by CCPB (an authority in charge of certifying and controlling food farming products in the biological, eco-compatible and eco-sustainable field) a certification stating that the grains used to produce flour are biological and locally farmed, with no use of plant protection products and of chemical fertilizers. The historical mill of Cingoli can be visited in the morning on Saturdays till 1 p.m. and upon reservation for guided group visits.

  • Cingoli- Monastery of St. Sperandia
    0733.602532
The stage includes the following destinations: Monastero di S. Sperandia

The exact year of the foundation of the monastery of St. Esperandia in Cingoli is unknown. It was named after a saint called Sperandia ( 1216- 1276) who was born in Gubbio and who was sanctified in the monastery which was named after her. She’s venerated as co-patroness of the town.

It got its shape over the centuries, starting from a former Benedictine monastery which already existed under its site and which was named after St. Michael the Archangel (according to some it dates back to the year 1030- 1050). Probably it was the Saint herself who gave an impulse to its foundation. After having led a life of pilgrimages and penitence she decided to retire there, as abbess, giving birth to a flourishing religious community composed of nuns coming from  St. Michael and others coming from the nearby monastery of St. Mark outside the Mentana Gate.

The nice monument dates back to mid- 18th century. The latest renovation works were carried out on occasion of the 7th anniversary of the death of St Sperandia (whose body is preserved incorrupt in the Shrine) and led to the opening of  a chamber of the saint which has turned into a holy oratory.

The sanctuary of St. Sperandia, visited by many pilgrims, gives the nuns the chance to carry out an important work of religious animation.

The cosy and bright renovated building welcomes young women seeking their vocation for their withdrawal and experience. A guest- house is being refurbished for large groups. People can nevertheless spend some hours with the nuns for an exchange of experiences, such as schoolchildren, young people preparing for confirmation, etc.

Every last Sunday of August a pilgrimage on foot is organized to the Caves of St. Sperandia, a cavity cut into the rocks at the sides of the Acuto Mount, which is about 10 km from Cingoli where there is a chapel dedicated to the Saint.

The interior structure, in wood and stone, has a horseshoe plan with two tiers of boxes divided by pillars and an upper gallery or gods, connected by an 18th century staircase. The parapets of the boxes and the gods are embellished with simple imagery produced in red and green tempera on a pink background. The ceiling over the stalls is likewise decorated in tempera with a fresco of an artificial crossbow in marble, against a sky with clouds. There is a central ceiling rose in painted wood surrounded by roundels depicting famous composers alternated with cherubs, muses and floral motifs. On the lowered proscenium arch is the name of the theatre, today named after the literary scholar Giovanni Mestica whose portrait in painted cloth can be seen on the proscenium valance.

Not far from the residential area stands the Benedictine Abbey of S. Urbano, built in Romanesque style before the year one thousand: it is a building of great architectural interest, divided into three naves and decorated by a crypt and by numerous stone-carved capitals. • Apiro - Abbey of Sant’Urbano
    0731 816222
The stage includes the following destinations: Abbazia di S. Urbano sull'Esinante

The Sant’Urbano abbey, named after the patron saint of the town, is a few kilometers far from Apiro, a hilly village near the Mount San Vicino and Mount Canfaito Nature Riserve.

The first written information about the abbey goes back to the 11th century. Struggling against  the neighbouring Apiro, it was an important centre of religious and political power until 1442 when it joined with the Abbey of San Salvatore in Valdicastro in Fabriano and later became private property in 1810. The building underwent various refurbishments which modified the original layout. The recent superimposition of farmhouses has changed the external appearance of the church and the right side, whilst the left side and the fascinating apse retain the original columns and hanging arches. Only the central part of the facade with its carved portal and structural fanlight is preserved. It is extraordinary example of Romanesque architecture; its external shape shows the three amazing apsis, corresponding to the three naves. Inside the church is one of the few still keeping
the three different parts of the Romanic architecture: the aula, dedicated to people, the presbytery, much higher and in gothic style, reserved for the monks, almost a church inside the church, and finally the crypt accessible through a narrow stair. On the first light of the 25th of May, day of patron Saint Urbano, a lighting ray entering by a hole above the apsis, shines through the darkness and perfectly enlighten a circle engraved in the stone of the wall on the left side of the entrance.
