Back The Vallesina Valley and the Castles of Jesi

The Vallesina Valley and the Castles of Jesi

A territory to be sampled in more ways than one!
The main attraction of the Vallesina territory is its series of historic villages with encircling walls full of culture and museums that extends across the hillsides; these are known as the “Castles of Jesi”: Belvedere Ostrense, Castelbellino, Castelplanio, Cupramontana, Majolati Spontini, Mergo, Monsano, Montecarotto, Monte Roberto, Morro D’Alba, Poggio San Marcello, Rosora, San Marcello, San Paolo di Jesi, Santa Maria Nuova, Serra de’ Conti, Serra San Quirico and Staffolo.

Jesi is the main centre in the Vallesina valley which extends along the middle section of the Esino river, from Serra San Quirico to the mouth at Rocca Priora (Municipality of Falconara Marittima). Dominated by the mass of Mount S. Vicino, the valley is enclosed by hills that slope gently down towards the sea with towns dotted along their tops. The city of Jesi, which was the birthplace of the Federico II, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Sicily, and the composer Giambattista Pergolesi, can boast one of the best-preserved city walls in the Marche, with gates, square, polygonal and cylindrical towers and curtain walls crowned with corbels. In Piazza Federico II stands the Cathedral of San Settimio. The Palazzo della Signoria, designed in elegant Renaissance form by Francesco di Giorgio Martini is home to the Planettiana Library and the Municipal historical archives. The Pergolesi theatre, built between 1791 and 1796 looks out onto Piazza della Repubblica. In via XV Settembre, the 18th century Palazzo Pianetti is home to the Civic Art gallery, which contains important works by Lorenzo Lotto and the magnificent Rococo stucco gallery.

This area is famous for its fine wine ‘Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi’, made from one of Italy’s finest native grape varieties.

Verdicchio is one of the Marche’s most famous and most historic DOC wines; Verdicchio Castelli di Jesi Riserva also has the DOCG appellation. Among the most popular red wines is the Lacrima di Morro D’Alba DOC, produced in the municipality of Morro D’Alba.

And vine-covered hillsides are precisely what greet visitors starting off on their journey in this area.  From Jesi various excursions can be embarked upon to discover the local area, away from the areas with a high concentration of tourism. This is a territory that you can discover at your own pace from charming villages to ancient churches and abbeys, from small museums to wineries.

The stages of the itinerary

  • Santa Maria Nuova
    0731.24971
The stage includes the following destinations: Santa Maria Nuova
Santa Maria Nuova lies in the centre of the Province of Ancona, in the heart of the Marche Region, on a hillside at an altitude of 249 metres. In this area the presence of humankind can be traced back to the prehistoric era, confirmed by a series of impressive archaeological finds. There are also a large number of discoveries dating from Roman times including the remains of a decorated villa and a funerary shrine, in the Pietrolone district. The first mention of an inhabited settlement however dates from 1201 A.D., the year in which an act of subjugation to the city of Jesi was signed by the Lords of the castle of Santa Maria della Ripe. This was in fact the town’s original NAME: Santa Maria Nuova and this was probably due to the fact that the castle stood in a location not far from the current one, made up of a series of rocky wastelands. Religious buildings of note include the Church of San Giuseppe (1762), with its extremely pure lines, full of decorations in stucco, Baroque altars and valuable paintings, and the parish church of Sant’Antonio da Padova, designed in 1793 by the architect Mattia Capponi. The building features a basilical altar decorated with multicoloured ceramics, an 18th century organ and two fine paintings, one by Filippo Bellini (1598) and the other by Aquilini (1658). The town hall, with Renaissance lines, dates from the 19th century and stands next to Palazzo Frontini, built in the previous century, with an 18th century portal in sandstone and frescoed vaulted ceilings. Everything is enclosed within the 16th century  castle walls, with three irregular quadrangular-shaped towers.
  • Jesi the city of Federico II, G.B. Pergolesi and Verdicchio wine
    0731 538420 - 0731.5381
The stage includes the following destinations: Jesi città di Federico II, di G.B. Pergolesi e del Verdicchio

Jesi is one of the most beguiling towns in Ancona’s inland and boasts a sophisticated old centre and lively cultural life. As you arrive you must look at its most striking feature - a belt of massive 14thC walls, built on Roman foundations and later strengthened with buttresses and impregnable towers, and topped by houses.
Piazza Federico II lies at the north-eastern end of the town where the Roman forum of Aesis once lay. Its name recalls the birth here of the fabled Medieval Hohenstaufen Emperor Frederick II in a tent on 26 December 1194. In Piazza Ghislieri is the Federico II Museum, a large multimedia museum dedicated to the emperor, documenting Federico's life and his stirring deeds. A few steps down Via Pergolesi and you will be in Piazza Colocci and in front of Jesi's most remarkable building, Palazzo della Signoria. This Renaissance palace was built at the end of the 15thC; the large rampant lion above the entrance is the symbol of the power the city once held. Piazza della Repubblica, Jesi's largest square, is dominated by the town's 18thC theatre, Teatro Pergolesi, home to a prestigious autumn opera season and named after the composer Pergolesi, who was born here in 1710.
On Via XV Settembre stands Jesi's most flamboyant building, Palazzo Pianetti. Apart from its hundred windows, the bland facade little prepares you for the over-the-top Rococo flourishes inside. The most extravagant part is the sugar-candy stucco work in the long galleria. The over-blown decoration alone would merit a visit; the added bonus of the civic art gallery makes it obligatory as here is kept a small group of some of Lorenzo Lotto’s finest works: the Judgement of Santa Lucia, a Visitation, an Annunciation and a restless Deposition.
To find an exhaustive selection of Marche wines you can’t miss the regional “enoteca”, in the city historical centre, where you get to know the delicious Verdicchio, a white wine proudly produced in this area.
Among the main events, to be mentioned is the Palio of San Floriano and historical re-enactment: during the first week of May the town fully plunges into a medieval atmosphere.

  • Monsano
    073.161931
The stage includes the following destinations: Monsano
Monsano is historically noted in 1197 as a dependency of the abbey of Valfucina (St. Vicino). Up to the end of the 13th century it was the Villa connected to the parish church of San Giovanni (the church of S. Giovanni would continue to exist until 1897 as a ‘burial’ church); it became a castle possibly from 1340 once Jesi, under the direct rule of the Holy See, lost Monte San Vito which passed to Ancona. As well as being an important industrial and commercial hub, Monsano is known for its typical 15th century walls, very original in their shape and layout in the form of a regular rectangle which can be seen nowhere else in the Esino valley. In the historic centre stands the Church of the Sacrament, formerly known as Santa Maria del Soccorso. Constructed in the 16th century, it was the residence of the Apostolic Brethren, and was rebuilt from the foundation up in 1701. Inside there are some paintings by Domenico Luigi Valori, dating from 1736. Near the Castle can be found the Church of St. Peter the Apostle, the nucleus of which dates back to the 12th century. Inside it conserves an interesting ‘pala’ (single-panel altarpiece) by Claudio Ridolfi depicting a ‘Madonna and Child and the Saints Francesco and Stefano’, dating from the 17th century, and a painting by Valeri. Outside the town, in a picturesque setting that has remained unchanged over time, stands the Church of S. Maria degli Aròli, in Romanesque-Gothic style. In the district of S. Maria there is a Sanctuary of the same name, the construction of which began in 1471, the year of the apparition of the Virgin Mary in the area. Inside the Sanctuary visitors can admire a splendid fresco of the Madonna, recently discovered in its original form and which has been painstakingly restored. In the locality of Sant’Ubaldo the 18th century Villa Pianetti can be found, with its impressive architecture and the magnificent park. The most important event of the year takes place in August, the Monsano Folk Festival, an international itinerant celebration of original and revival folk music.
  • San Marcello
    0731.267014
The stage includes the following destinations: San Marcello
San Marcello is located on the highest hill to the left of the Esino river, at 233 metres a.s.l. Originally called Monte San Marcello, the centre takes the name of the early 4th century Saint and Pope who sent San Settimio, the proto-bishop and evangelist to Jesi. The town has castle walls set out in a rectangular layout with quadrangular and cylindrical towers. Sites of notable architectural interest include the Renaissance-style Palazzo Marcelli, with a bossaged portal and a small loggia with four arches; the Church of Santa Maria del Rosario, which contains a painting by Andrea da Jesi and the Church of San Marcello (17th century) with two fine paintings. The ‘Ferrari’ theatre, the town’s historic theatre, is well worth a visit, as indeed is the Telephone Museum, housed in Palazzo Marcelli, which exhibits telephones from all over the world. The hilly countryside providing and interesting landscape is particularly suited to wine growing. Wines produced are the Esino, Rosso Piceno, Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi classico and the Lacrima di Morro d'Alba.
  • Morro d'Alba
    0731.63000
The stage includes the following destinations: Morro d'Alba
Morro D’Alba is a small hilltop town in the province of Ancona, few miles from Senigallia and Jesi. Until the mid 19th century the town was known as ‘Morro’, a name most probably derived from the pre Roman term ‘muur’ or ‘moor’ which signifies altitude and rock.
The pleasing old part of this rocky village is embraced by an escarpment wall dating back to the second half of the15th century. Atop these walls runs a remarkable walkway pierced by porticoes that offers ever-changing views of the delightful countryside around, with vineyards, olive trees and sunflowers. Ruins of two Roman villas have been found in the area of Sant’Amico along with Roman coins and medallions.
The clock tower rising above the town features the symbol of the town of Jesi, a rampant lion. The gateway into the town, once with moat surrounding it, was repositioned in the early twentieth century. Must-see attractions are:
The parish of San Gaudenzio, a fine example of 18th century architecture; The Church of Santissimo Sacramento, built in the first half of the 17th century, with a highly decorated wooden altar.  The church is also home to a collection of religious procession lanterns dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries; the church of San Benedetto completed in 1512; the church of Santa Maria del Fiore, a rural church, situated on a small road of the same name, boasting frescoes and other decorative works dating from the late 17th and early 18th centuries; the Church of Sant'Amico situated in an area of the same name.
The utensil museum, housed in the underground vaults of the town hall, documents many aspects of rural life, with tools and machinery.
There is another excellent reason to stop here - to try the celebrated local red wine, Lacrima di Morro d'Alba, a heady garnet brew with an elegant finish, definitely a cut above a mere country wine.
The most important events taking place in Morro d'Alba during the year  are: the "Festival of Lacrima di Morro d’Alba", which is held every first weekend in May, "Cantamaggio", the ritual offertory song celebrating the advent of spring and the new agricultural season (every third weekend of May) and the "Festival of the Lacrima di Morro d'Alba and Acqualagna truffles", which takes place every third weekend of October.

  • Montecarotto
    0731.89131
The stage includes the following destinations: Montecarotto
Located at 380 m a.s.l., Montecarotto is part of the eastern spur of the sub-Apennine area of the Province of Ancona, at 18 km from Jesi, straddling the upper valleys of the Misa and Esino rivers. The historic centre conserves some imposing fortified walls built in 1509 to the design of the architect Albertino di Giacomo of Cremona, who restored and enhanced the original medieval enclosure. It is considered one of the most important fortifications in the Esino valley. Two towers stand at the entrance to the town joined by a covered walkway at the height of the ramparts. By climbing up in the imposing tower, elegantly castellated and adorned with a clock, visitors can admire the splendid panorama that takes in the valleys of the Misa and the Esino rivers. The 19th century Municipal Theatre is very interesting, featuring a portico supported by brick columns and with a richly decorated interior. The Mail Art Museum is worthy of a visit, the only Italian public museum dedicated to mail art, i.e. artistic expressions made possible by the postal service. The museum today exhibits fine engravings by Marchigian artists, such as those of Orfeo Tamburi, Pericle Fazzini and Arnoldo Ciarrocchi’s ‘Carte Lauretane’. In the territory and headed by the Santissima Annunziata Parish of Montecarotto there are a large number of churches with a wealth of art and history bearing witness to the strong faith and devotion of the people of Montecarotto: the Collegiate Church of the Santissima Annunziata, the Church of San Filippo, the Church of the Crucifix and the Convent Church of San Francesco. Serra de 'Conti is located on a hill 217 meters high, on the right side of the valley of the river Misa.
The old town of Serra de' Conti offers a significant example of urban structure of the thirteenth century, adapted and transformed first in late medieval age, then in modern age as a result of economic-social changes. Along the perimeter of the ancient city run the surrounding walls, characterized by ten defensive towers and a monumental fortified gate. Among the major sites of religious architecture are: the Church of S. Croce (Holy Cross), the Church of S. Michele, the Cloister of S. Francesco, the Church of Santa Maria de Abbatissis, the rural Church of San Fortunato and the Monastry of Santa Maria Maddalena, housing the “Museo delle Arti Monastiche” (Monastic Art Museum). Noteworthy is also the Council Room, painted by Bruno Bruni, a contemporary artist known as Bruno d'Arcevia. Not far from Serra de’ Conti, on the border with the territory of Arcevia is an important example of industrial archeology: an oven for bricks, Hoffmann type (19th century). Built in an area rich in very good water thanks to the proximity of the river Misa, it was in operation from 1884 to 1971. Privately owned, it recently underwent a major restoration and preservation work.
The local product is the “cicerchia” (blue sweet pea, Slow Food Presidium), excellent in soups, but also mashed or served as a side dish to “zampone” (stuffed pigs foot). The first thing you'll notice as the village comes into view are the copertelle, or covered walkways built above the 12th century walls. You can stroll through them taking in the splendid views of the valley below. You can also admire the striking tower of defense, built between 1360 and 1374. The church of Santa Lucia is one of the region's prettiest high baroque churches built in 1650 on an older church. • Castelplanio
    0731.813401
The stage includes the following destinations: Castelplanio

The origin of its name comes from the historical events of the nearby abbey of St. Benedetto dei Frondigliosi, mentioned in documents of 1199. The former name Castel de Plano depends on the buiding of a castle on a flat surface. Castelplanio was fortified because it was considered a military bulwark and an obstacle to the attacks of enemies. IN fact, in the first half of the 15th century the people in the castle could withstand the attacks by Francesco Sforza, who eventually conquered the castle in 1433. Ten years later Nicolò Piccinino was asked by the Pope to chase away Sforza’s army. The castle surrendered and it was completely destroyed. The people who survived paid in order to have the castle rebuilt. They built two rows of castle walls, with towers, little moats, a drawbridge and only an entrance gate.

Castelplanio was reborn and until the 19th century it was tenaciously linked to  Jesi, as one of its 16 castles.

Worth visiting is the Town Museum Fossa Mancini, which is housed in the Town Hall and was the private residence of the Earl Fossa Mancini, and the Church of St. Sebastian, which was built in 1878 on a project  by architect Mattia Capponi (1720- 1803). Inside there’s a 16th century polychcrome terra cotta of the bust of St. Sebastian attributed to Mattia della Robbia; a 16th century nice canvas representing the Crucifixion by Claudio Ridolfi and a gold wooden statue of St. Joseph. In the church there was a polyptych by Lorenzo Lotto , whose surviving panels are at present at the State Museums in Berlin.

In Castelplanio  a good white-wine DOC is produced and the municipality belongs to the Italian association of wine cities and to the Olive Oil Towns Association.

Those fond of bike and walking can enjoy the Black Crab Route (Sentiero del Granchio Nero), named after the crab which lives in a ditch. It goes from the bottom of the valley ( hamlet Macine) to Castelplanio. The difference in height is 200 meters and it’s 5 kilometres long.

One of the oldest festivals organized in the Esino valley  in the last week of July is the “Crescia sul Panaro” festival. It’s based on traditional Marche cuisine popular food: the polenta ( cornmeal mush). It was rolled out with a rolling pin and cooked on a overheated metallic plate with a handle (the panaro). That’s how you get the crescia which is combined with vegetables and sausages. Side- events take place such as exhibitions, antiques’ markets, shows, inns and Verdicchio wine, of course.

In the hamlet Piagge, in the church dedicated to Madonna del Carmin, every year, on the Sunday following July 16th, the Holy Mary is celebrated. It’s also called the day of the consumed people because it was celebrated at the end of very hard agricultural work.

In Castelplanio hot- air balloons are built, painted  and launched. So in mid- June  this contest, together with the throwing of cheese wheels and its historical re-enactment in the night- time in costumes, is organized in order to revive this old tradition.
