  • Macerata and the Sferisterio

    Macerata is known across the world for its annual open-air opera festival, taking place in its open-air Arena Sferisterio - a neo-classical arena erected by private subscription in the 1820's. Its centre was almost entirely built between the 16th and 19th centuries. The Renaissance two-tiered arcades of the Loggia dei Mercanti on central Piazza della Liberta' is the town's most striking piece of architecture. The best of the city's palaces line Corso Matteotti, the road that leaves the square at the side of the Loggia, while Corso della Repubblica leads to Piazza Vittorio Veneto where stands Palazzo Ricci, which houses a collection of twentieth century Italian art.
    The Palazzo Buonaccorsi was built in 1700–1720 thanks to Raimondo Buonaccorsi and his son Cardinal Simone Buonaccorsi using designs by Giovanni Battista Contini. The piano nobile is known for the Sala dell'Eneide, decorated with the most impressive frescoes by Rambaldi, Dardani, Solimena and canvases by Garzi and Giovanni Gioseffo dal Sole. The building also houses the Museo delle Carrozze, where fine carriagies can be admired. The cathedral was built in Neoclassical style in 1771–1790; it has the remains of a 15th century Gothic bell tower. Macerata boasts a very old University, which was founded in 1290.  In the historic center there are nice buildings : the Town Hall, the neoclassical facade on which it was placed, in 1952, the image of Our Lady of Mercy with the inscription Civitas Mariae;  the Church of San Paolo, built between between 1623 and 1655; the 64 meters high Civic Tower, from whose terrace you can enjoy a panorama that sweeps from the Sibillini Mountains to the Adriatic Sea; the eighteenth-century Teatro Lauro Rossi, the  nearby Basilica of Mercy, full of stuccos and marble; the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, boasting an "Epiphany" by Tintoretto. 
    The most typical dish is  vincisgrassi, a sort of baked lasagna. The ingredients of the original recipe are: ham, truffles, parmesan and a sauce of milk and flour. The main events taking place in Macerata during the year are: the Macerata Opera Festival (July / August) and the Feast of the Patron San Giuliano (August).

    It's a pretty hill town, just north of Macerata; it  belongs to the association of “The most beautiful villages in Italy” and boasts “the Orange Flag”,
    and the Green Spike label, thanks to a goog recycling activities and great attention given to, educational activities on environmental issues.
    It is surrounded by medieval walls and has a particularly attractive small piazza; overlooking it, the solid 15th century Palazzo Comunale, built over a shady portico, has three beautiful bottle-glazed windows. Steps lead through an archway to one side, up to the parish church, topped by a stubby spire. Inside the sober Gothic brick interior, there is refreshingly un-restored terracotta altarpiece by Mattia Della Robbia (1527), a lesser-known member of the famous Florentine artistic family.
    The Compagnucci Palace houses the town picture gallery where works by Girolamo Buratti, an important canvas “Madonna enthroned with Child between Saints Andrew and Helen and musician angels” by the Spanish painter Ioannes Hispanus and the painting representing St. John the Baptist in prison by an unknown painter are preserved. In the Romanesque church of St. Nicolò there’s the oldest bell of the Marche as well as frescoes dating back to the 16th century The church of Saints Philip and James houses a canvas attributed to Pagani; the wooden altar of the church of Santa Croce is unique. The Church of St. John the Baptist houses the museum of sacred art and furnishings; the 19th century Theatre Delle Logge is embellished by painting decorations and stuccowork. The Collegiate church of St. Lorenzo was largely renovated in 1723; it houses a large crucifix with a triumphant Christ . Worth visiting are the recently restored historic courtyards: the Augustinian cloister, the Garden of San Giacomo and the courtyard of the Monastery of the Poor Clares. The most typical specialty is "sughitti", a kind of pudding made with must, sweet corn flour and walnuts.The most important events are: the historical re-enactment "Palio dei Terzieri" (in July) and the festival of "Sughitti" (in October).

    Treia lies in valley of the Potenza River to the north and belongs to the association The most beautiful villages in Italy. It was founded by the Romans; it was both a Roman colony and  Municipium. In central Piazza della Repubblica you can admire  the little Palace of the Georgica Academy made by  Valadier; the town hall, that is home to the Civic Picture Gallery, and the church of San Filippo. The Cathedral, dedicated to the SS. Annunziata, boasts precious works of art. Must-see attractions are: the church of San Michele, the little church of  S.Chiara, in baroque style, the church of San Francesco, the church of Santa Maria del Suffragio, the 19th century civic Theatre. Tower Onglavina which stands proudly on a rocky spur is all that remains of a former castle. On a clear day it offers one of the most complete panoramas of the Marche region, from the Apennine mountains to the west as far as Monte Conero and the Adriatic to the east.  In San Lorenzo area there is the Sanctuary of the SS. Crucifix, boasting a valuable fifteenth-century crucifix Treia’s  specialty is the so called “calcione”, a typical Easter cake made with cheese. The town is famous for the annual Disfida del Bracciale, played out in the first Sunday of August. This fast and furious ball game dating from Renaissance times is played with three players in each team.

    The Civic Archaeological Museum displays several fragments of sculptures and inscriptions from different eras and civilizations: from the Piceni to the Romans. It also bears evidence of the close link between this town and the East, in particular Egypt, with two Egyptian sculptures representing a female deity and a head of the god Serapis discovered in the area of Santuario del SS. Crocifisso. There are also five fragments of Egyptian sculptures and the Serapaeum, a site consecrated to the cult of Serapis. The exhibits of Roman statuary date from the period of Augustus to that of Hadrian and Antonius.

    Nestling between Macerata and the coast, it preserves its original layout: its well-preserved walls retain the earliest four doorways and the roads feature the ancient stone paving. Montelupone, where the Orange flag flies, also belongs to the association of The most beautiful villages in Italy. The central Piazza del Comune is overshadowed by the tall tower of the Palazzo del Podestà with its striking battlements. Next to it is the nineteenth-century town hall, with its neo-classical portico, housing the historical Theatre Nicola Degli Angeli.
    Not far for the centre, near the river Potenza, a must-see attraction is the Benedictine abbey of San Firmano. Montelupone boasts a long-standing agricultural tradition; the most typical farm produce is the artichoke. Sagra del carciofo, the festival centred around the local artichoke, take places in early May.

    Recanati is a remarkably hill town, just inland from the Adriatic Sea. It is situated on a ridge between the valleys of the Potenza and the Musone rivers, with a wonderful view that stretches from the Sibillini Mountains to the Adriatic Sea. It's close to the heart of many Italians as the birthplace of one the country's greatest poets, Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837). Around every corner, plaques mark spots referred to in his poems.

    ATTRACTIONS: Palazzo Leopardi, at the southern edge of town, where he was born and brought up, holds memorabilia, manuscripts and his fascinating library, containing 20,000 volumes. Further places connected with Leopardi and his poems are: the square of "Il sabato del villagio", just in front of the eighteenth-century Palazzo Leopardi; the "House of Silvia; the "Hill of Infinity", the peak of Mount Tabor, which inspired the eponymous poem composed by the poet at 21, and now home to the Orto sul Colle dell'Infinito literary Park; the ancient vegetable garden of the monastery of the Poor Clares and the World Center of Poetry and Culture, the Leopardi National Studies Centre, the Tower of the "Passero Solitario", located in the courtyard of the cloister of Sant'Agostino, Palazzo Antici Mattei, Leopardi's mother birthplace.  In 2014 the film " Il giovane favoloso", focusing on the life of the poet, was shot for most of the time in Recanati.
    The most significant religious buildings are: the church and the convent of the Capuchin friars, dating back to 1600, the Church of Santa Maria Morello, where Giacomo Leopardi was baptized, the Church of San Vito, with its impressive facade designed by Vanvitelli, the Church of Sant'Agostino with its beautiful Istrian stone portal, the Church of San Domenico, housing the "San Vincenzo Ferrer" frescoed by Lorenzo Lotto, the Cathedral of San Flaviano, boasting a magnificent 17th century wood ceiling. In the delightful Piazza Leopardi you find the statue of Giacomo Leopardi and the neoclassical Town Hall, built at the end of the centenary of the birth of Giacomo Leopardi; the Torre del Borgo, built in the second half of the twelfth century as a symbol of the foundation of a single municipality, now reopened to the public. A nice example of fifteenth century architecture is Palazzo Venieri, built by Cardinal Venieri. Recanati is also the home town of the great tenor, Beniamino Gigli and the Museo Gigli in the historical Teatro Persiani holds a collection of his costumes from some 30 operas, a mock-up of his dressing-room and some of the many presents he received, including a walking stick from Verdi. The museum in Villa Colloredo-Mels, a splendid 18th century villa on the edge of the town centre, holds Recanati's greatest art treasure, a room with four of Lorenzo Lotto's finest pictures, including a most haunting Annunciation packed with almost breathless narrative detail - a high spot in any art-lover's tour of the central Marche. 

    The most typical specialties are the "piccicasanti", a kind of sticky soup, made with poultry, pork and extra virgin olive oil. Two delicious wines are: Rosso Piceno (red wine) and Colli Maceratesi (white wine). The most remarkable events taking place in Recanati during the year include: Lunaria, offering a series of concerts in July in the central Piazza Leopardi; "Amantica", boasting a summer program ( July) with traditional music; San Vito Festival, celebrating the the patron saint of Recanati, taking place on 15 June.

    Castelfidardo is one of the world's leading center for the manufacture of the accordion.
    It now styles itself the world capital of the accordion. In its Internation Museum of Accordion you can admire more than 150 examples of the instrument. The town still has a thriving musical industry and claims that the piano accordion was developed here in 1863 from the more primitive Austrian squeeze box. In September the International Accordion Festival draws musicians from all over the world ; they can transform the sound of this humble instrument into unimaginable artistry.
    The historic battle of Castelfidardo is remembered by the imposing National Monument of the Marche to the Victorians of Castelfidardo, made in 1911 in bronze by the sculptor Vito Pardo, which depicts General Cialdini on horseback in the act of leading Piedmontese soldiers against the papal troops. In addition, the area of ​​the battle can be visited, with the Ossuary, the memorial of the fallen, and the Civic Museum of the Risorgimento.
    Five miles from the town centre you can't miss the  "La Selva di Castelfidardo", a recognized Protected Floristic Area, where the homonymous Environmental Education Center is effective. Excursions and guided tours are provided by skillful staff.

    In summertime, during the weekend you can visit Villa Ferretti, boasting many remarkable works collected by Duke Roberto Ferretto, keen on Italian art, who wanted to honor the Marche, the Church and his noble family.

    The town is also popular for the production of gift items, objects and furnishing accessories in gold and silver.

    Colli al Metauro is a municipality with a population of 12,452 inhabitants in the province of Pesaro and Urbino; it was established on 1 January 2017 and includes the former municipalities of Montemaggiore al Metauro, Saltara and Serrungarina. Saltara retains the original medieval form, with its ancient walls. Near the village stands the elegant church sanctuary of the Madonna della Villa, which houses a fine recently restored antique organ. Further west is the monumental church of San Francesco in Rovereto (sec. XV) with the adjacent convent, now used for spiritual retreats and cultural meetings. On a hill to the north is the so-called Villa del Bali, a large country residence built by the noble family Negusanti (sec. XVI) and lated purchased by Counts Marcolini, who held the hereditary title of the military order of chivalry Bailiff of St. Stephen. The Villa now houses the Museum of Balì, an interactive science museum, boasting a planetarium, an observatory and equipped classrooms.
    Serrungarina  is little town perched high on a hillside. Inside the city walls, on the site of a former fortress, is now the parish church of St.Antonio Abate, built in 1665 and rebuilt in 1867. Not far from Serrungarina are also the ancients 'castles' of Bargni and Pozzuolo.
    Montemaggiore al Metauro is an ancient walled town, that dominates the right side of the lower Metauro valley. A former possession of the Benedictine abbey of St. Paterniano, Montemaggiore al Metauro was one of the defensive bastions under the Lords Malatesta against the land ruled by the Montefeltro; in 1462 Federico da Montefeltro finally defeated Sigismondo Malatesta. In 1944 there was the struggle between the retreating German troops and the allied ones along the so-called Gothic Line. The former church of Santa Maria del Soccorso now houses the Historical Museum of the Metauro river "Winston Churchill". It boasts abundant historic relics of World War II, such as diaries, military weapons, uniforms, badges, model war, official documents and memorabilia. The museum brings back the day  - August 25, 1944, when British prime minister Winston Churchill headed towards Montemaggiore al Metauro with General Alexander (Commander  of VIII Corps of the British fleet) in order to watch the deployed troops in the Metauro valley.
