The stages of the itinerary

  • Sassocorvaro
Reflected in the waters of the artificial lake of Mercatale and from its hilltop position, the town of Sassocorvaro dominates the Foglia Valley. The town
extends along the side of the hill from where it is possible to admire the splendid panorama of Montefeltro, here surrounded by the gentle hills typical of The Marche inland territory.

Of notable interest is the mighty XV Century “Rocca Ubaldinesca” designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini and designated National monument. The interior of this castle, amazing example of military architecture, houses a perfectly preserved small theatre and an art gallery. The castle was used during the Second World War as a secret storage place for some most important Italian works of art, hidden there to prevent them from being plundered by the retreating Germans. For a number of years now, this event has been remembered through an initiative called "L'Arca dell'Arte", which honours the modern-day saviours of major works that would otherwise have been lost forever. Worthy of note is also the XVIII Century Palazzo Battelli.

The lake is a destination for rowers, fishermen and visitors, all looking for relaxation, tranquility and an ideal place for their picnics as a park with bar and restaurant is also available and open from April to October.

The varied offer which can be found by the lake is able to meet the needs of a large audience, with its well-maintained paths, shelters and benches, small sports facilities for beach volley, a children's play area, a  motorhome parking area and a small restaurant.

Swimming is permitted in a limited area where beach umbrellas, a trained and equipped lifeguard and boat rentals are also available.

Nature and gastronomy lovers can luxuriate in a walk along the lake and taste traditional dishes, including truffles, in the quality restaurants widespread in the area. Not to be missed in Sassocorvaro are the old town and the Ubaldinesca fortress which is home to the museum Arca dell'Arte (Ark of the Art), an exhibition of life-size replicas of the greatest painting masterpieces that in 1940, thanks to Pasquale Rotondi, found a secret refuge from the dangers of war.

  • Sassocorvaro - Theatre "della Rocca"
    0722.76177 - 0721.69341
The stage includes the following destinations: Teatro della Rocca

The theatre was built inside the Sassocorvaro Fortress in 1475 by Francesc di Giorgio Martini, commissioned by Federico da Montefeltro. Ceased to perform its military function, the theatre was opened to the public only after 1860, when the fortress became part of the cultural heritage. The theatre has a particular structure: it does not have boxes, but only a wood mezzanine flanked by columns. The round arch was painted in 1885 by Enrico Mancini (1867-1913) with late-neoclassical figures and the prevalence of the colour blue, as well as the decoration overlooking the balcony, and the curtain. Unfortunately, painted decorations on the lower part of the walls were lost; today, the plaster wall is in one-colour.

  • Montecopiolo- Sanctuary of the Madonna del Faggio

The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Faggio ( Beech tree) is in the municipality of Montecopiolo, within the Sasso Simone and Simoncello regional park.

According to the legend two young shepherds were helped by the miraculous intervention of the Madonna. They took the image down the village to honour her, but miraculously, the day after the image was found at the beech tree again. Therefore a sanctuary was built in that precise spot and for its small dimensions it was called “Hermitage of Holy Mary of the Cell”. In the 13th century it already existed.

After World War Two works were carried out in order to widen it and they led to the destruction of the original building. A portico joining the entrance of the church and the hermitage was added. A wooden statue of the Madonna is in the sanctuary and it’s probably as old as the original cell.

In modern times the sanctuary is visited by pilgrims. On occasion of the festivities dedicated to the Madonna, there are two religious festivals on the first Sunday after 15th August, with the traditional procession in the meadows near the sanctuary, and on 8th September.
